The National Cancer Institute (INCA), a Brazilian Health Ministry's body which develops and coordinates preventive and control actions on cancer, is implementing ALERT's oncology solution in its various units. The Portuguese company is thus reinforcing its activity in Brazil - it is already present in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, among other states.
With this new contract, INCA will be able to standardize clinical and administrative data on oncologic patients and implement the electronic health record in all its units, thus improving the management of clinical information.
Besides organizing campaigns on the prevention and control of cancer, INCA's mission is to also provide care to patients suffering from the disease. For this purpose, the organization has various hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. INCA provides care to 1 300 patients and performs 700 surgeries every month. With over 70 years of activity, it is now building new premises which will enable the institution to provide care to its over 10 000 patients in one single location. The National Cancer Institute also holds the Bone Marrow Transplant Center which was created in 1983. It is one of the biggest centers for the treatment of blood related diseases in Brazil. It is equipped with the most advanced diagnosis public center, through imaging, in Latin America, the Molecular Imaging Research Center, which was launched in October 2009.
According to Luiz Antonio Santini, the institute's Managing Director, ALERT and INCA's partnership goes beyond the computerization of the medical area. "We are building innovation in the technological management area," he declares. The Managing Director also believes that the Project will be eligible to apply for technological innovation awards.
Jorge Guimarães, President of the Board of Directors of ALERT, highlighted that "INCA is a reference customer. We are looking at contributing towards progress in Medicine, which can then be replicated in other places in the world. This project motivates us at every level. Cancer affects everyone. I personally find it touching because I thought of becoming an oncologist before creating ALERT. This is a unique situation and we are very grateful for this opportunity."
ALERT has been experiencing a significant growth in Brazil, a country where it has had a subsidiary since 2007, with its head office in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais.
The company's first contract in Brazil was signed in December 2007 and it was celebrated with the Minas Gerais Secretary of State for Health. Since that time, ALERT has gathered various reference customers in Brazil, such as UNIMED and the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Group in Belo Horizonte, Santa Helena Medical Organization, Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital and Albert Einstein Hospital, besides the Fiocruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro.
